IST a little know synonym for snob

•April 16, 2008 • 1 Comment

So a few days ago I was asked to write for http://www.istbuilding.com It was advertised by saying its “purpose is to uncover all the bullshit in the College of IST to actually fix some problems AND provide a decent news/gossip” Naturally I was hesitant since I am a poor writer (if you can’t already tell you are stupid), I’m a total asshole (read my last comment) and I hate a majority of people in IST (not the person that asked me tho). I assumed that this place would be a site for the ist “elite” to act like snobs, like most IST clubs and what not. I was assured that it wasn’t like that and I should say. Not only is it a place for the elite to act like snob and wave around their epenis, they are making money off of it. THAT is what pissed me off. I’m giveing my time for free so you can make fucking money off it? Over my dead body. There is a reason that I love the CC-NC-SA. Because I don’t care if someone uses my work if they don’t make a profit. If you like web2.0, mac book pros, longboarding, acting like you know linux (or anything but still talk enormous amount of crap), humans vs zombies and general faggotry, IST is for you and that site is probably right down your alley.

“Highlights” of the past year of my shit

•April 14, 2008 • Leave a Comment

So as I just realized I’ve been kicking it for ~ a year. I don’t have much to write about so here are some points of the last year.

And this is why it’s not called “Brainbook”
All is well in modern suburbia.

The ever classic To Catch a Dumbass (it’s only a classic since it has the infamous crazy.gif)
And don’t forget Full Slackware 12.0 Review (on a side note, 12.1 should be coming out in the near feature)

So there is what I consider worth reading.

Ewwbuntu.com

So as you all should know by know i bought deadfool.net I also got 1 free additional domain and I couldn’t decide what I wanted to get. Well I’ve decided and it is www.ewwbuntu.com If you can’t tell or are semi retarded, it is a play on words with ubuntu. I don’t like ubuntu and think that it is slowing ruining linux from the inside. I’m not 100% sure what I’m going to do with it yet. The idea of making a distro called “ewwbuntu” was thrown around.

Review of shit I’ve bought

So as you know, I bought a Sans Disk Sansa e280. It’s pretty mediocre. It fits all the music I can listen to between charges, which btw last me almost a week vs my ipod lasting me maybe a day (the battery is old so that’s why the ipod sucked). It is small but not too small and lastly, it’s not a ipod. On the downside, the player mangles some of my songs tags so they show up as “unknown”. The worst part of it is its interface. It is clunky as hell. You can’t go back from playing music to the album list. It is really annoying, but hopefully rockbox will be out for it soon. A minor annoyance is the buttons. The 4 buttons are not as high as the wheel so it makes it slightly difficult to click them. Also when charging, the light is constantly on. Overall, I give it a 8/10 since it does what I want it to do. If it had rockbox it would probably be a 9/10 since you can’t really do much about the buttons and the light.

Since my old noise canceling Phillips cans were falling apart I also decided to get a new pair of headphones. I decided to get a pair of Sennheiser 212pros. I heard (no pun intended) great things about Sennheiser. According to their sid, the 212pros are a “closed dynamic hi-fi stereo headphones have a balanced sound image with a slight emphasis on the bass response.” Personally, I think the bass is needed due to the poor bass from portable music players. Even with the incredible bass, at low volume the bass isn’t as great as at higher volumes. To counter poor bass from the players, I think I’m going to build an amp with bigger than normal caps for more bass. I actually prefer these over my speakers. I would highly recommend them to anyone. At the price of about 60$ they are one hell of a deal. I’ve seen many people with Bose cans which cost about 120$. I’m not sure what’s so special about them , but I highly doubt they are as good as the 212pros. They have the rage of 12hz to 19khz. This isn’t really a problem for me since mp3s will lowpass and cut off anything above 19-20khz. They block out sound surpurbly, and if they can’t block out ambient noise, they will down it out since they are capable of going up to 112dB. That is louder than a jackhammer or about as loud as a jet at 100 meters away. The only “drawback” is its 10 foot cord. I fixed that with a twist tie. 9.75/10

Lastly, on a unrealated note, I bought www.deadfool.net. At the moment, blog.deadfool.net points here.

Dropped it like it’s hot (because they make shit products)

So I woke today got ready for class, picked up my head phones and turned on my (and hopefully any) ipod for the last time. A loud screech came from the ipod as the read head scratched across the platter. BOOM HEADCRASH! Damn that was my 3rd ipod in about 5 years. I started with the 3g with the wheel. It was decent until it died about 18 moths later. From what I don’t know, even plugging it in wouldn’t turn it on. Then I got a 4g black and white. This was product had the highest $/shit ratio I’ve ever seen. It wasn’t even 2 weeks after the warranty was up the audio jack died. I could have kept it to connect to my computer but thats pointless. Then I should have waited a few weeks to get a 5g but I wanted music on the go, so I got a 4g color. It was pretty decent lasting me just over a whopping 2 years! Think about buying a new laptop, tv, or car every 18 months. This ipod took a fair beating for 2 years tho. My dad wanted to see it and I handed it to him and he dropped it on the hard wood floor, and I’ve thrown my back pack down countless time with it in there. Out with hard drive players in with solid state.

So that brings me to this after noon. Went to newegg and looked at mp3 players. I originally was after a 4gig player, but I realized that for 10$ more i could get a 8 gig Sans Disk Sansa e280. It’s gotten great reviews, look solid and can fit enough music on it that I won’t get board between syncs. Best part is that it’s 30$ cheaper than the 4gig ipod mini. That means it’s 30$ cheaper than a player with 1/2 the storage. Is the price worth it to know Steve Jobs didn’t ejaculate on it’s plans and make shitty commercials for it? I think so, but a fuck ton of people don’t. I can’t wait for my sansa. Hopefully newegg still has v1’s sitting around so i can put rockbox on it.

PS:Macbook air is a joke
PSS:Macbook hair would rock. MBH is just a cover for your macbook with a wig on one side.

You’re doing it wrong

So I’m back. Since my posts are never coherent, I will mention a tool named Cypherxero. Since he deleted his blog where he rambles about his toolocity (that is the word used to tell how much of a tool you are) you can read his latest shit here. Since his resume says he can “Can Learn ANY complex topic in 72 hours or less” he put his mind to proving that diebold cheats and actually flips votes in the election. So 2 hours later (would take any normal person a few minutes to write and they wouldn’t use java), he has his PROOF that dieblod cheats. All he did was write some java app that when you click on the name it counts the votes. Then he uncomments the vote flip function. HOLY SHIT! Some how now when he clicks on Ron Paul it gives Bush a vote. I don’t know what kind of black magic he used but this totally blew my mind. It’s not like you can just take the totals for each person and go temp=total1 total1=total2 total2=temp. OK I’m done with that now.

So, this anonymous shit is getting lame. It’s really not going to do much in the end. But from what I’ve seen, they are doing it wrong. In case you don;t know, they are DoSing sites owned by CoS. I personally think they did it wrong. Apparently, they used udp flooders. The problem with udp is that it is best effort and has little overhead. Best effort means that they datagram (a udp packet) isn’t guaranteed to get to its destination. The second one is that they are faster to process by the router and switches. The solution to this would be use TCP. TCP has another advantage too, spoofed source IP. If you put another IP address in the source IP field and you try and make a connection, the server will send a SYN+ACK to the spoofed IP. That computer will realize that it didn’t request a connection and request a close or send a RST. So with this tactic, you can hit 2 servers at once. You could also use a xmas packet. This is pretty much a packet that takes longer to process and uses more processing power, not to mention the packet is totally useless since all it does it tell the receiver that you aren’t going to send any more data. This makes it easier to lock up their hardware with less people. I depending on how their systems respond to xmas packets with spoofed source IP could help drive traffic to a second IP address too. Their way works, but I’m just suggesting possible better ideas.

Other inconvenient things they could do is throw lock and chains around their doors and gate, get prepaid envelopes from them and send them heavy stuff like lead shot so they have to pay the postage or even signing up their email addresses for spam. Taking down their sites and filling all the phone lines is annoying, but isn’t going to put them out of business. If you want to do that you need to have a drastic financial impact on them. I’m not saying burn down all their churches, and buildings owned by CoS, but that would defiantly put a huge impact on their bottom line.

On a side note, I personally think that Scientology is dumb as hell and needs to die, but the shenanigans isn’t going to do much.

Top 10 Worst Web2.0 Startup Ideas

•November 12, 2007 • 1 Comment

So as you have probably read these 100x before but, I’m doing one of those “10 things” posts. Except I’m not trying to be useful. Hell I’m not even trying to be tactful. Just read and you’ll see. These are probably the 10 worst web2.0 ideas ever.

  1. Childupon – Very simple idea, you take the stumbleupon idea and make it for child porn. As of writing this www.childupon.com isn’t taken (neither is .org .net or .us). This isn’t www.jailbaitupon.com either (which is still available) either. Myspace already has a strangle hold on the jail bait market. Childupon’s content is targeted at the most hardcore child pornographers. The ones that tape five year olds getting gangbanged by their priest, dad, uncle, teacher and some random black guy. What can be greater than this? You could make money too! All you have to do is put an ad or two and you are making money off of other peoples content! How simple can this be? Illegal you say? You’ll become a sex offender you say? Oh totally forgot about that part.

Ya there really isn’t any ideas that I can think of  that are worse than childupon. That is pretty bottom of the barrel, the lowest of the low. And thus sums up my sarcastic and satirical post about web2.0 and “10 ten” blog posts. Have a good day. That is if you still can.

I’m more popular than porn?

•November 5, 2007 • Leave a Comment

So the other day I was using Stumbleupon (great time waster/finder of stuff that you’ve seen 1000 times before), and found this http://www.top25web.com/pagerank.php. It is a site that tells you the page rank for the sites you input. So naturally, I try this site. Some how it’s a page rank 4. So my friend thought it would be a great idea to make a porn site and I was bored and put it in there. Page rank 2. I’m more popular than porn. If you want to know the site, its http://www.chuckfucter.com. Help him almost break even. It wasn’t the cash cow we thought it would be. Wondering about my stats I went to google’s webmaster thing. Apparently, my #1 search term is “sweet im”. I have no clue what that means but I’ll take it. Here are some more weird ones “getting nskrd”, ” infected penis”, and “bgpl“. What a bunch of random shit.

PAM is a bitch

•October 9, 2007 • Leave a Comment

So I’ve been gone for over a month, and I assumed that no one reads this shit that I post. Apparently, I’m wrong. I get something like 40 views a day. So anyway about PAM, it’s a bitch. If you don’t know what PAM is go here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pluggable_Authentication_Modules Pretty much it’s an overly complicated way to make sure users are authenticated. I don’t really know why we need it, we have Shadow. Pretty much it solves the problem of having your password hashes in /etc/passwd which is readable by everyone. Having your password hashes readable by everyone is bad news waiting to happen. So /etc/shadow is root only readable, which makes it pointless to crack since you could just change the hash to something known. Which leads me to what I did or was attempting to do. I was trying to change PAM to use BlowFish instead of salted MD5 for password hashes. Why use a cryptographically weaker algorithm you ask? Simple BlowFish takes a really fucking long time when you switch keys. Which means brute forcing, making a rainbow table, or dictionary attack is pretty much impossible unless you use a password like “lol”. So john the ripper on my computer can crack my salted MD5s at a rate of about 2000 per second. Thats pretty good but I could speed that up by salting a rainbow table and hashing it to revel the true hash (I’m pretty sure that would work and this time the key rate should be in the 100,000’s). Now BlowFish runs at the slow ass pace or about 100 keys a second. That’s really slow. So I embarked on this adventure and thought I had it. All I did was make all the text that I type in disappear. I was pretty sure I locked myself out so I packed up and went to the lab. When I got there, i typed in exit and logged out. I logged into root with out seeing anything and lo and behold I could see my text again. So I just reverted my files and I’m back.

On a totally unrelated note, where I may or may not have given a presentation, if you put your wireless card into a cretin mode, you might be able to see some possibly interesting networks and traffic or it could do jack shit.

Maybe I should have said this sooner…

But I changed to gentoo a while ago. I was kernel upgrading and I made a boo boo. Some how it corrupted gcc and /boot so I was pretty much fucked. And instead of fixing it by probably booting to a liveCD and chrooting into it, I just took advise (from constant harassment to try gentoo) from another LUG member. Gentoo is ok, but i want to go back to slackware but don’t have the time to.
