Thanks for the review. My knowledge of Linux is hardly vast as I've only been using it for 15 months (and nine of those months were on Ubuntu) so I'm always looking to learn more. I'm going to try to install Slackware this weekend and hopefully I can get it to run.

Just do everyone a favor, and DO NOT USE linuxpackages.net I’m not even going to link to that site. They are horrible. They DO NOT compile in a clean environment, so you will get random dependencies. You also don’t know what is in there. For all you know they could be root kitted. Also, they are kind of shady. They have popups that get around firefox’s blocker and apparently have a package to stop people from “leeching” or reselling.</BLOCKQUOTE>

This is mostly nonsense. The "package to stop people from leeching" is a long-standing myth, it's never been true. You don't know what is in there with *any* third-party binary packages -- if you want to be certain, compile it yourself, after reading and understanding all the source to make sure there's no rootkit in there either.

While the popups on the site indeed are horrible (I browse with Privoxy to avoid them), and I *really* wish Jim Simmons would get rid of them, I have found the packages there to be of good quality 99% of the time. I know I compile those packages I contribute myself from a clean, stock installation. Sometmies 3rd party dependencies are unavoidable for a package to work. All in all, in spite of those damn pop-ups, I have not found any better or more popular English-language package source. If there is any, please let me know and I'll switch to it (no, slackbuilds.org does not count).

From a hardcore slacker (started back when it was 112 or so 3.5" disks and hours to install);

Great review and spot on, I just wiped my AMD64 laptop of SL11 and did a clean DVD install of v12. Install was very typical for Slack... set source and destination filesystems and it do its thing... less than 6 mins later a nice clean system to tailor to MY needs, ham radio apps and the like (some of which require Gnome libs, so off to install Gnome).

I've installed 12 on my homebrew machine and it went cleanly, as always. I'm configuring and tweaking now. KDE and XFCE are sweet, but I spend most of my time in Fluxbox. Fluxbox on Slackware has so little overhead you can actually tell how fast your machine is.

I think with HAL and DBUS on Slackware now there's less and less reason for the average desktop user to go with something like Suse or Ubuntu, which are a great distros, but by no means as fast or as rock-stable as Slackware.

Nice review.

Can you elaborate on how you upgraded from a previous version and what version you upgraded from?

Also, can you clarify "This is a command line installer. It ISN’T. Don’t listen to what people say." it is confusing. What do you mean by "It ISN'T"? Or was that an incomplete sentence?

Thanks for posting this review.
